On January 10, 2017, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) granted Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority a sound mark having U.S. Reg. No. 5,116,853 for the "Skee-Wee" call. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority now joins a small group that have successfully trademarked a sound. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority not only becomes the first not-for-profit and Greek-lettered organization to secure a federal registration for a sound mark, but we are also the only registrant to register a sound mark for association services, i.e., membership.
